Description

The Dharmachakra or the eight-spoke wheel of righteousness symbolizes the Noble Eightfold Path set out in the teachings of Buddha. Tibetans call this symbol ‘chos kyi’khor lo ‘ or the ‘Wheel of transformation’. It is a representation of the change in human nature that is brought about by following the teachings of Buddha. The eight spokes represent the eightfold path. The centre of the wheel represents the core of Buddha’s teachings, the spokes are wisdom and the circle engulfing it is the power of concentration which is one of the most potent forces of spiritual transformation. The wheel is also representative of the cycles of birth and death; liberation from which is only possible if through following of Buddha’s teachings.

Here the spokes of the Wheel are hand-inlaid with red coral and turquoise, in between are eight symbolic spirals etched into the brass. At its centre lies a beautiful raised turquoise disc, which features an inlaid golden Om symbol.

Om (or Aum) is a Hindu sacred sound that is considered the greatest of all mantras.

The syllable Om is composed of the three sounds a-u-m (in Sanskrit, the vowels a and u combine to become o) and the symbol’s threefold nature is central to its meaning. It represents several important triads:

  • the three worlds – earth, atmosphere, and heaven
  • the three major Hindu gods – Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva
  • the three sacred Vedic scriptures – Rg, Yajur, and Sama

Thus Om mystically embodies the essence of the entire universe. This meaning is further deepened by the Indian philosophical belief that God first created sound and the universe arose from it. As the most sacred sound, Om is the root of the universe and everything that exists and it continues to hold everything together.

This stunning one-of-a-kind pendant is offset by a beautiful necklace of red coral seed beads, interlaced with oblong turquoise barrel beds flanked by glittering gold beads and finished with gold clasp. This is really two necklaces! If you slip the pendant off, you are left with the vibrant red coral, turquoise and gold beaded chain, which looks stunning against primary colours like white or black!

The overall feel of this piece is of  richness, symbolism and dramatic beauty.
